The equine community of Central Oregon and the veterinary world at large are grieving the sudden passing of Dr. Tyler Newton, DVM, who died on January 30, 2026. A pillar of the Bend community, a devoted husband, and a father of three, Dr. Newton was the heart of Tumalo Ridge Equine and a widely respected expert in equine medicine and nutrition.
A Journey of Passion and Expertise
Born in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Newton spent much of his life in Southern California before his love for horses steered his professional path. His journey began uniquely as a farrier; after attending the Cowtown Horseshoeing School in Montana, he operated a successful farrier business for five years.
His insatiable desire to provide the best care for horses led him to the University of California, Davis, where he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2014. During his time at UC Davis, he served as Co-President of the student chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), establishing himself early as a leader in the field.
A Career Dedicated to the Horse
Dr. Newton began his veterinary career at the prestigious Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center in California, serving as an intern and later an Associate Veterinarian. Seeking a change of pace, he moved his family to Oregon, where he served at the Bend Equine Medical Center before establishing Tumalo Ridge Equine in Tumalo with his wife, Ashley.
Dr. Newton was a true “horseman’s vet.” He wasn’t just a clinician; he was a trainer, a jumper, and a team penning enthusiast. He brought his vast knowledge of hay and nutrition to his family’s hay farm, ensuring that every horse under his care received holistic, expert attention.
A Devoted Family Man
Despite his professional accolades, Dr. Newton’s greatest joy was his family. He was a cornerstone of his household, a loving husband to Ashley, and a proud supporter of his three young daughters in their various competitions and activities. He was often found with a camera in hand, capturing the beauty of the Oregon landscape and the lives of those he loved.
The family has announced that due to this unimaginable loss, Tumalo Ridge Equine will be closing its doors. A GoFundMe has been established to support Ashley and the girls as they navigate the loss of their father and their family livelihood.
